Content of Course
Exam Results

This course focuses on the development of a child from conception to the age of five, developing knowledge and understanding in all aspects of child development.

Assessment:

This flexible and practical work-based qualification offers un-tiered assessment to reduce examination stress for our learners and to help them gain real-world experience. The course consists of 60% Coursework and 40% Examination.

Students sit one paper of I hour thirty minutes which covers the following areas:

• Family and parenting
• Preparation for pregnancy and birth
• Physical development
• Nutrition and health
• Intellectual, social and emotional development
• Community support

Coursework

There are 4 pieces of coursework:

● The Child Study Task (30%)

Those wishing to study this course should have access to, or contact with, a child under the age of 5 years, whom they can study.

Students will be expected to keep a diary containing observations of the Child's development. The diary should include photos, drawings, activities and record sheets completed during the visits.

This task will assess the following skills: research, selecting and justifying choices, planning, practical work and evaluation, which will enable the learner to progress to further education.

● Three Short Tasks (10% each)

Two of these will test your planning, practical and evaluation skills. For example making a toy for a child.
The third task is investigative in nature. For example research into the diet of a pregnant woman and then producing an information leaflet using the information.

The Specification covers the following areas:

● Reproduction, family planning, pregnancy
● Antenatal care, Birth, Post natal Care
● Physical development of a new born baby
● Nutrition and Child Health
● Intellectual Social and Emotional development
● Play and Communication
● Family Structures, Preschool Education and the Community

Skills:

By the end of the course students will have a good understanding of the development and the needs of children under the age of 5 years. They will also develop skills in researching and investigating a task. Organisation, communication and observation skills will be improved.
