Why Study History?
History is about people – real people whose lives were sometimes
exciting, like travelling across the Wild West in a wagon train, and
sometimes frightening, like facing an operation with no anaesthetic.
Whatever their lives were about, there's a fascinating, and sometimes
tragic, story behind them. As well as being exciting, this course will help
you to develop skills which will be useful in a wide range of jobs or in the
further study of History.
You will learn the following skills:
* How to interpret and evaluate pieces of information (sources);
* How to communicate and apply your knowledge; * How to describe and analyse
the key features of the period studied;
* Critical thinking and problem solving.
You will have the opportunity to study
photographs, films, videos, CD ROMs, newspapers and original written
sources. You will do role-play, use ICT to produce your own movies and generally have exciting and
stimulating lessons.
The History department has a record of consistently achieving good grades
for large numbers of students. This is due in no large part to a team of strong
committed teachers with many years of experience to draw on. In addition we
do all we can to ensure that students are in groups with their friends.
