How does the course work?

The BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Music is made up of various units: one core unit, which everyone must take and a selection of other specialist units. The specialist units enable you to study particular areas in more detail and complete a number of tasks set by your teacher. This vocational course will give you a practical understanding of the skills and knowledge needed for a career in the music industry. You will be provided with an insight into the various employment opportunities available in the industry, and have the opportunity to develop essential skills involved in music production and management.

This course can be described as a taster for entering the music performance or music technology industries. On completion of the course, you will have a clearer idea of what the industry is about and whether you are cut out for it. The course involves the study of music performance, management and composition together with recording techniques and basic music technology. Most of the time you will be learning through practical assignments using the Internet and library as well as visiting musical establishments and working alongside professional musicians

The skills that you develop during these projects will be skills that you use for the rest of your life - communicating with others, solving problems and achieving projects to tight deadlines.

So why take BTEC Music?

You will be expected to compile a portfolio of work throughout the course that will be assessed and marked by your teacher. You will also complete an exam. Because the course is mainly practical you will have the opportunity to organise gig nights, produce CD recordings throughout the course and will be encouraged to use the web to both research and present your work.

Throughout the course you will be encouraged to work independently and in small groups on written projects and presentations using the Internet and music software on the school network. Lessons will be based primarily in the music block, however certain projects will involve field trips and visiting professionals giving talks on the music industry.

So will I be expected to perform?

Yes!  You must be a strong performer or vocalist and be happy to perform in front of a wide variety of audiences (in class and in public performances).  Performance is a BIG part of this two year course, however you will be encouraged to form your own bands or ensembles during this time. If you are interested but feel your instrumental playing needs help, we can organise lessons for you through our many instrumental teachers who visit  the school every week.

Course Overview

You will be assessed through a portfolio of assignments set by your teacher and also in an exam.  They will involve different elements including presentations, organising events, research projects and performances. The assignments will involve deadlines that must be adhered to in order for you to achieve the best mark possible. This course is equivalent to 1 GCSE.
