Why choose GCSE PE Full Course?

At Polesworth, all Year 11 pupils complete an AQA Short Course in GCSE PE. The course takes place over 2 years and involves both practical and theoretical elements as follows :

60% Practical - 2 different assessments in physical activities from 2 different groups of activities.

40% Examination - One 45 minute terminal exam at the end of Year 11.

Some pupils opt to complete the Full Course PE GCSE. These pupils have an additional 5 lessons of classroom based PE lessons per fortnight.

 ●  I have good skills and understanding in a variety of sports/physical activities.
 ●  I am enthusiastic about and interested in sport and physical activity.
 ●  I want to learn how the body works to make me do physical activity.
 ●  I want to know why some people do sport and some people don’t.

GCSE Options -Subjects - P.E (Full Course)

AQA GCSE Physical Education (full course)

The course takes place over two years and consists of practical and theoretical components in the following format:

 ●  Practical Component - 60%

 Four assessments

- from at least two groups of activities
- at least two performances must be as player/performer
- pupils can be assessed in a performer, coach or official role

Practical (60%)

Candidates must be competent and assessed in a number of sporting activities selected from at least two of the following six National Curriculum Areas of Activity:

Performing at maximum levels

Athletic activities

Exploring and communicating ideas

Dance activities

Outwitting opponents

Games activities

Accurate replication

Gymnastic activities

Identifying and solving problems to overcome challenges

Outdoor and Adventurous activities

Exercising safely and effectively to improve health and wellbeing Fitness and health activities

In school, pupils will be assessed in a range of activities within core and optional PE lessons.

Candidates can also be assessed in sporting activities not offered within school, for example:
 ●  Swimming;
 ●  Horse-riding;
 ●  Duke of Edinburgh;
 ●  Martial Arts;
 ●  Golf;
 ●  Snow sports;
 ●  Water sport




For practical assessments, candidates will be assessed on a variety of criteria:

 ●  Acquiring and developing skills and techniques;
 ●  Evaluating and adapting their own performance;
 ●  Demonstrating an understanding and practical application of the rules/laws and conventions of the physical activity and the roles of officials;
 ●  Demonstrating an understanding of health and safety issues and their practical application.

Pupils and teachers will work together to establish each pupil’s four strongest sporting activities.

Not only will candidates develop and improve their skills, fitness and understanding within the sporting activities covered, they will also acquire vital life skills:
 ●  Communication;
 ●  Cooperation;
 ●  Leadership;
 ●  Teamwork.

Terminal Examination (40%)

- Extended answers based on a scenario issued prior to the examination

Full course candidates will cover the following topics:

- Energy production (aerobic and anaerobic)

- Emotional health and well-being
- Cultural and socail factors
- The media
- Sponsorship

- International sports and events

The knowledge that candidates gain will be invaluable for those choosing to follow a Physical Education related career. Here are just a few careers paths you could follow:

Should I choose GCSE Full Course PE?

What qualities do I need to do well? Checklist:
 ●  I have a keen interest in sport and enjoy learning;
 ●  I am competent in a number of different sports/physical activities;
 ●  I want to learn about how and why people take part in sport;
 ●  I can work effectively on my own and as part of a team;
 ●  I am willing to work hard in all aspects of the course.

Students wishing to study A Level sport and PE do not have to do the full course as the short course is adequate preparation.
