GCSE (Full Course)
From September 2009, the course is made up of four mandatory units. Two pieces of internally assessed coursework and two external assessed written papers.
Units 1 & 2 will be completed in the first year:
Unit 1: Introduction to Design and Making 30% - Coursework
Unit 2: Sustainable design 20% - External written paper
Units 3 & 4 will be completed in the second year:
Unit 3: Making Quality Products 30% - Coursework
Unit 4: Technical Aspects of Designing and Making 20% - External written paper
Coursework:
Unit 1 involves the student designing and making a product to prototype stage and evaluating its suitability for a given market.
Unit 3 involves the student designing and making a fully functioning quality product.
In both pieces the student will be given a design brief from which their creative ideas will be developed. As a result of product development the students will be expected to give reasoned decisions for the materials and equipment used and evaluate the outcome.
Written papers Unit 2 and 4 - 1 hour
Unit 2 – This paper aims to develop a student’s knowledge and understanding of sustainability, environmental concerns, cultural, moral and social issues.
Unit 4 - This paper focuses on the knowledge, skills and understanding underpinning the designing and manufacture of products for a given mark
Content of the Course:
Students will learn about fibres and fabrics. Ways of making fabrics will be explored, e.g. knitting, weaving and felt making. Adding colour to fabrics will be experienced, e.g. embroidery, collage, dyeing and printing. The use of the sewing machine will be developed.
The students will also learn about the fashion industry and development of new garments. Students will need to study examples of both old and new products in order that they might gain awareness and understanding of trends and innovations in design and manufacture, labelling ,packaging and the impact that the design of such a product is having on the environment, society and the economy
The opportunity to visit the Clothes Show exhibition at the NEC every year is available to students.

Skills:
Students will develop knowledge of the properties of fabrics and fibres.
Students will learn to:
i) Design and make creative items in Textiles.
ii) Use textile equipment.
iii) Research in detail their coursework project.
iv) Evaluate their work.
