Welcome To The Mathematics Department

Maths is an interesting and challenging subject in its own right. Maths is important because to live a successful life in the modern world you will need it every day. Maths is an integral, if unseen, part of our every day lives. Every time we use the internet, visit the doctor, go shopping, listen to the weather forecast or get on a bus maths is there. In fact ……..

MATHS IS EVERYWHERE!

The Internet

When we use the internet we need to make sure that the information exchanged is secure. All the encryption on the internet is based on prime numbers. These numbers, which are only divisible by themselves and 1, provide the building blocks of secure and virtually unbreakable codes. In fact all the information on your computer is stored as binary numbers which are manipulated using mathematical operations.

The Doctor

If you are ill the doctor will decide what treatment is right for you and she does this by using probability. She will consider the risk of side effects of the treatment and the probability that it will make you better. Medical imaging devices, CAT and MRI scans use geometry to take 2D pictures of your body and convert them into a 3d image.

Shopping

Most people borrow money to buy a house or a car. To decide which bank to borrow from or even if you can afford to borrow at all you will use maths. All the shops that you go in will have been designed and built by engineers using maths. Fashion designers use geometry to make clothes out of 2D material that will be worn by 3 dimensional people.

The Weather

Weather forecasts are an area of maths called fluid dynamics. It uses looks at how air clouds and water moves and uses equations to produce the forecasts.

o

The Bus

Maths is used to timetable buses, plan journeys, understand traffic flow and design the vehicles.

So you can see maths really is EVERYWHERE.

Mathematics teaches you to learn. It requires you to build up an understanding from basic principles, to build upon existing knowledge to develop general concepts and to apply general concepts to specific examples. It teaches you to learn to think logically, to ask questions and to investigate.

At Polesworth we believe that mathematics should be taught in an inspiring way that requires pupils to become independent, active learners who take responsibility for their own learning. In lessons they will be explaining, listening and interacting with each, other exploring new areas of mathematics and consolidating others. The requirement that all pupils are expected to think and contribute in lessons applies to every pupil regardless of their age or mathematical ability.

We are a dedicated team of teachers who have worked hard to develop our own games and resources that enable pupils to learn and to enjoy Mathematics. All students study GCSE Mathematics and we are becoming an increasingly popular choice at AS and A Level.
