Year 8 Visit To The Holocaust Centre, Nottingham
“We still haven’t learned a thing to date. It is still happening and people are being killed just because of the group they come from.” - Harry Bribring
The RS Department took 140 Year 8 students to the Holocaust Centre in Nottinghamshire. The aim was to find out more about the experiences of the Jews and other persecuted groups during the Holocaust as part of the spring term study of Judaism. Whilst there the students reflected on how the Holocaust was allowed to happen due to the widespread prejudice and hatred, and reflected on how prejudice and discrimination towards many groups is still present in our society. The students were very lucky to listen to Jewish guest speakers who survived the Holocaust.
Also at the Centre is an on-going memorial to the millions of children who died at the hands of the Nazis. For the past 14 years the Centre has asked visitors to place a stone on a pile, the aim being that each stone will represent one child who died. So far the estimate number placed in 170,000. Overall 1.5-2 million children are estimated to have died.
Our students were a credit to the school as they asked the guest speakers very thoughtful questions about their experiences.
Here are some photos from the day.
